Name Miko Sato

Position Medical Officer

Rank Lieutenant JG

Character Information

Gender Female
Species Human
Age 26

Physical Appearance

Height 5'4"
Weight 118 lbs
Hair Color Black
Eye Color Gray-blue artificial irises
Physical Description Miko Sato is a petite Japanese woman with a slender, athletic build and an understated presence. She has straight black hair that falls to approximately shoulder length, although she generally keeps it loose when off duty and pulled back or tucked behind her ears while working. Her complexion is fair, and her features retain the distinctly Japanese appearance inherited from her family. Her eyes are the most unusual feature about her appearance. At first glance they appear completely natural, but are sophisticated cybernetic replacements, installed as part of a medical treatment that allowed her to overcome the congenital blindness with which she was born.

Family

Father Katsu Sato
Mother Yuna Sato
Brother(s) Hiroshi Sato
Sister(s) Ayako Sato

Personality & Traits

General Overview Miko is quiet, observant, patient, and extremely deliberate. She tends to listen before speaking and rarely feels the need to dominate a conversation. This can cause people who have just met her to mistake her reserved nature for shyness or aloofness. Those who know her better quickly discover that she possesses a dry sense of humor and a surprisingly sharp wit. She is also considerably more confident than she initially appears. Miko has spent her entire life dealing with people who either underestimated her or treated her as though she were fragile. Consequently, she has developed a strong independent streak. She dislikes being treated differently because of her cybernetic implants. At the same time, she is not ashamed of them and is perfectly comfortable discussing her condition with people who have genuine questions.
Strengths & Weaknesses Strengths:
Extremely patient
Calm during emergencies
Highly intelligent
Exceptional memory
Strong analytical abilities
Excellent medical knowledge
Strong understanding of cybernetic medicine
Highly observant
Excellent under pressure
Empathetic without becoming overly emotional
Disciplined and methodical
Comfortable working independently

Weaknesses:
Can be overly self-critical
Sometimes refuses assistance when she actually needs it
Has difficulty accepting praise
Can become frustrated by people who make assumptions about her abilities
Occasionally overanalyzes decisions
Tends to work longer hours than necessary
Still relatively inexperienced with starship operations
Can be stubborn once she has decided upon a course of action
Hobbies & Interests Miko is an avid reader, and enjoys reading older medical texts and comparing historical medicine with modern Federation techniques. She plays piano and shamisen. Miko has retained a strong appreciation for Japanese tea culture. She keeps a small tea set in her quarters and occasionally prepares traditional tea for friends. Miko has also developed an unexpected fascination with astronomy, and the irony of someone born blind becoming fascinated with the stars is not lost on her. She considers watching the stars to be one of the most peaceful activities she knows.

Personal History Miko was born into a close knit family in Kyoto. Her father worked as a civilian aerospace engineer, while her mother was a professor of comparative literature. Miko was completely blind at birth due to a rare congenital condition affecting both her eyes and the neurological pathways responsible for vision. For several years, treatment options were limited, but eventually, researchers working with her family developed a cybernetic interface capable of replacing the damaged portions of her visual system. The procedure was experimental, but it was also successful. Cybernetic visual implants were connected directly to her nervous system, allowing her brain to receive and interpret artificial visual signals. Her parents spent much of Miko's childhood working with physicians and researchers in an effort to find a means of restoring her sight. Their willingness to pursue experimental medicine had a profound influence on Miko and eventually helped shape her decision to become a physician herself, as doctors were a constant presence in her life from the moment she was born.

Miko had to spend several years learning how to interpret the artificial signals her brain was receiving. At first, the information was confusing and overwhelming. By the time she reached adolescence, however, Miko's cybernetic vision had become sufficiently natural that she rarely thought about the fact that she was seeing through artificial organs. She became fascinated with medicine, particularly the question of how damaged biological systems could be repaired or replaced.

By the time she entered university at the University of Tokyo, Miko had already decided that she wanted to become a physician. She studied general medicine alongside biomedical sciences and graduated with excellent marks in 2381. While she began looking towards a career in advanced neurological and cybernetic medicine, Miko knew that she was not content to remain on Earth. She wanted to work somewhere that would expose her to medical problems that could not simply be solved by calling the nearest specialist or transferring a patient to a major hospital. Starfleet offered precisely that opportunity.

Miko entered Starfleet Academy in 2381. Her admission attracted considerable attention because of her cybernetic visual system. Although Starfleet had extensive experience with cybernetic augmentation, Miko's condition was unusual. She had not lost her sight later in life; she had been born without functional vision and had developed her visual processing around an artificial neurological system. There were questions about whether she could safely serve aboard a starship.

Miko answered those questions through performance rather than argument. She completed every required medical and physical examination. More importantly, and perhaps more impressively, she deliberately trained herself to operate without her visual implants, learning to navigate using sound, touch, environmental sensors, and memory. She also trained extensively with tactile interfaces so that she could continue treating patients if her implants were damaged or disabled. Her instructors came to regard this as one of her defining characteristics.

Miko excelled academically. She was less enthusiastic about physical training, although she eventually became competent in hand to hand combat and emergency survival techniques. She graduated from Starfleet Academy in 2385 with an advanced commissioned rank due to her advanced education in medical. Miko requested assignment to a ship operating in deep space. Her request was approved and she was assigned to the newly commissioned USS Helvetia.

Service Record Notes:

Cybernetic Implants

Miko's artificial eyes are highly sophisticated. Her implants provide normal human equivalent vision, low light amplification, variable magnification, limited infrared and ultraviolet perception, enhanced depth perception, and image stabilization.

Miko normally keeps her vision at a level comparable to ordinary human sight. She dislikes unnecessarily using enhanced vision because the additional information can become distracting. The neural interface is considerably more complicated than the artificial eyes themselves. The system converts digital information into neurological signals that Miko's brain interprets as visual information. Because she grew up using the system, she does not experience her vision as an electronic display.

Her cybernetics are not invulnerable. Power fluctuations, electromagnetic interference, certain energy fields, and physical damage can interfere with the system. If both implants become nonfunctional, Miko becomes functionally blind. She has therefore spent considerable time training herself to operate without them. She also carries emergency equipment allowing her to interface with external sensors and medical equipment through tactile controls.
