| Physical Description | Shawn Lao presents himself as a very structured man with precise composure married with a quiet intensity. His overall aesthetic is posh and elegant, but not flashy or garish. He has a sharp, angular face structure that features a profoundly defined jawline and high cheekbones. This gives him a naturally serious expression even at rest. His dark hair has been styled several different ways over the years, but recently he’s kept it neatly styled but not rigidly so. It is practical, with just enough looseness to suggest he rarely has time for unnecessary vanity. His eyes are observant and steady. One can often observe them scanning a room as thoroughly as a trained security officer. Threat assessment. It gives away that he’s all too used to treating patients while under fire yet there’s also calm focus about him. Although he’s guarded and distant, gazing into his eyes reveals a man very committed to providing care. Generally, he maintains Starfleet standards but wears his uniform with a utilitarian mindset often preferring vest and variants over the traditional duty uniform. His posture is upright but not stiff. His stance is more functional than formal. In though Sickbay, his sleeves are often rolled slightly, and he carries himself like someone ready to act at a moment’s notice rather than stand on ceremony. He will waste no time scrubbing up and being deep inside a patient. |

Personality & Traits
| General Overview | Lao is often noted as being principled, disciplined, and deeply committed to the preservation of life; however, he is notably not gentle in how he expresses this. He is both revered and disliked for being the kind of officer who will challenge authority if he believes hesitation will cost a patient their life. His strong authoritative assertiveness can and will clash with even higher-ranking officers, especially in a medical setting. He has a quick analytical mind paired with a sharp tongue when pressed. His confidence though can easily edge into arrogance. This is especially prevalent when dealing with those he perceives as inexperienced, incompetent, or overly performative. At his very core, Lao is simply protective be that to his patients, to his staff, and to anyone placed under his care. However, that protectiveness often manifests as control. He struggles to take a step back, to trust others fully. Delegating is not his strong suit. He does not easily open up emotionally to others, preferring appearing competent over vulnerable. |

| Hobbies & Interests | Hobbies & Interests: Calligraphy & Personal Journaling Practices Chinese calligraphy as a grounding ritual, pairing it with handwritten medical reflections and case notes he doesn’t log into official systems. Botanical Cultivation (Medicinal Plants) Maintains a small collection of medicinal herbs including some native to non-Federation worlds, studying their properties and occasionally experimenting with hybrid treatments. Strategic Games Plays Go and other strategy-based simulations, appreciating the balance of patience, foresight, and decisive action—much like triage under pressure. Badminton Prefers fast-paced, one-on-one matches that emphasize precision, reflexes, and control. Lao approaches the game analytically, often studying opponents’ patterns and exploiting small inefficiencies much like diagnosing a patient. Distance Running & Endurance Training Uses long distance running as both physical conditioning and mental regulation. He favors early or late shifts on the ship’s track, pushing himself to maintain steady pacing, reflecting his endurance in prolonged medical crises. |
| Personal History | Shawn Lao was born on Earth to a Chinese-Filipino family with strong ties to humanitarian aid and civil service. They were civilians who worked for the Mariposas. His early years were stable and structured until the sudden loss of his parents in an accident at the hands of Cardassians when he was nine. His parents were trying to provide support to colonist on the borderlands. Officially, both governments have accepted the incident as a case of mistaken identity, Shawn has differing opinions on the matter. As a child he relocated to Norpin V, a Federation colony on the frontier where he could be with family, raised by his paternal grandparents both of whom were seasoned colonial medics. There, Lao was exposed early to the realities of survival-based medicine: limited resources, high stakes, and no margin for hesitation. During his formative years, this experience would shape the nurse he would become. By the time he was a teenager, he was already assisting in medical emergencies, learning to improvise treatments and prioritize care under pressure. This environment forged his decisive approach and instilled a belief that hesitation costs lives. He had observed it up close and would remind himself of this lesson. He was admitted to Starfleet Academy and concentrated on the sciences. He took courses in biology, chemistry, and anatomy. As a nursing student these were necessary. He steered himself towards critical care, choosing direct pathways. After graduating, he attended Starfleet Medical’s Program completing an advanced degree. During the Dominion War, Lao served in high-intensity medical roles where he gained firsthand experience in mass casualty events and combat triage. His performance under pressure and under fire earned him commendations and recognition as a highly reliable field practitioner. Following the war, he was assigned to starships on humanitarian missions. His most recent assignment is the USS Helvetia, with the position of Head Nurse aiming to prove himself an essential pillar of the ship’s medical operations. |
